The Scenario Sprint
An intensive 1-day scenario planning workshop for corporate decision-makers
You’ll develop four potential futures for your company — all of them plausible
The Scenario Sprint
Your future business landscape will be full of possibilities… and challenges, too. Can you already identify them today? Scenario planning is a structured methodology for doing exactly this.
I’ve developed an accelerated version of the scenario planning process — one that allows you to foresee how alternative futures could unfold for your company, all in a single day. But not only will you visualize different scenarios that could arise for your company; you will also see how they would affect your business model, your strategy, your team, your customers,… and thus your entire future success.
This accelerated approach is called the “Scenario Sprint” — an intensive workshop that will result in more clarity about your potential business environment a decade from now: its characteristics, chances, and risks.
In one intensive day, here is what we’ll do together:
Determine the external uncertainties that could have the greatest impact on your company’s strategic terrain over the next decade.
Visualize four alternative scenarios that could plausibly take shape around you, depending on how those uncertainties evolve during this time.
Identify specific opportunities and challenges you’ll be likely to face in each scenario.
Explore practical actions and initiatives you should be ready to take in response.
This high-energy exercise is not about predicting the future. It’s about foreseeing a range of plausible futures — but most importantly, understanding their implications for your business. This is what allows you to make well-grounded plans in advance to exploit the opportunities you have spotted. By the end of the Scenario Sprint, you will have developed a portfolio of scenarios and strategic responses specific to your company’s situation.
Some of the organizations — large and small — I’ve conducted scenario planning workshops for
How the Scenario Sprint works
1. You’ll work in pairs. Each company sends a team of two, so when you and your colleague are working on the process, you’ll be doing so with a knowledgeable discussion partner, and the two of you can call upon each other’s knowledge and experience. At a typical Scenario Sprint workshop, several company teams take part in parallel — but each team is only working on its own scenarios. This format means you are not sharing any confidential plans or information with anyone else in the session except your own teammate.
2. You’re guided all the way through. As we go through the scenario generation methodology together, you’ll be led step-by-step by me, Woody Wade. I have 15 years’ experience running this process for all kinds of organizations. In 35 countries so far!
3. You’ll emerge with a valuable practical roadmap. For each scenario, you’ll gain foresight that can be translated into immediate action back in the office.
Which two people should attend?
The pair of participants attending the Scenario Sprint from your company is up to you. But I would recommend some combination of:
The CEO or a member of the Board of Directors.
Another key member of the leadership team.
A strategist from marketing, finance, operations, or human resources.
An up-and-coming manager with leadership potential.
Short and sweet: If you share responsibility for navigating your company through uncertainty and shaping its strategic direction, this workshop is for you.
